A tour with Cole Burrell is always memorable. We see gardens that we could not otherwise see. Our individual garden tours are guided by head gardeners and garden owners.

2018 Destinations

April 19-25, 2018Spring Gardens of Virginia

Only 1 spot left!

It is a pleasure to launch my Spring Gardens of Virginia tour. I hope that you will join me in my home town of Charlottesville for a one-of-a-kind adventure. I have arranged visits to a stunning array of private gardens of friends and clients who are ready to welcome you into their cloistered sanctuaries. Many of these generous folks are opening their gardens for the first time, and just for our group.

I have enlisted friends and professional colleagues to tour us through the historic homes of presidents Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, as well as the Academical Village of Jefferson’s University of Virginia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Historic Garden Week in Virginia offers additional opportunities to explore private estates only open for this unique event.

This truly is a behind the scenes tour affording access to private gardens that are never open to the public, as well as personal escorts through some of histories most storied homes. I look forward to sharing the beauty of Virginia in springtime with you.

June 18-28, 2018Gardens and Chateaux of Normandy and the Loire Valley, France

Registration Open!

Normandy and the Loire Valley lay claim to some of Europe’s most beautiful and romantic gardens. The region’s mild climate and acidic soil provide the perfect conditions for growing a vast array of plants in a wide range of garden styles from simple cottage gardens to grand estates featuring walled kitchen gardens, diverse botanical collections, subtropical plantations and landscaped “English-style” gardens. Exquisitely pruned hedges contrast with opulent beds of colorful flowers.

Come with me to explore the rich history, delicious food and breathtaking scenery of rural France. We travel from Paris with stops to explore quaint towns, private gardens and opulent chateaux in the two regions of France most visited by garden lovers the world over. Garden highlights include le Vastérival, le Jardin Plume, l’Etang de Launay, and les Jardins Agapanthe, as well as Giverny, Villandry and Versailles. We will pay our respects at the American Cemetery and Omaha Beach D-day Memorial, and visit the stunning Bayeux Tapestry. No trip to the region would be complete without seeing the stunning Japanese Bridge reflected in Monet’s lily pool at Giverny.

November 2—18, 2018South Africa: Botanical Riches, Gardens, and Game Reserves With optional extension to Victoria Falls

Registration Open!

South Africa is noted for its biodiversity, big game animals, colorful birdlife, wines, cuisine, culture and history. During this springtime exploration of natural and cultural history, we indulge in all that South Africa has to offer. Johannesburg and Pretoria share a rich gardening tradition. We will explore both public and private gardens in these capital cities.

The Cape Floral Region, the smallest but richest of the world’s six floral kingdoms, is dominated by Mediterranean-type fynbos filled with botanical treasures. An excursion to The Cape of Good Hope takes us through rugged scenery in the heart of the fynbos. In addition to wild areas, we will explore private and public gardens, including the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens at the foot of Cape Town’s Table Mountain. We will explore Cape Town’s storied colonialism and Apartheid.

The Drakensberg Mountains offer a distinctly different flora, with familiar plants like gladiolus and agapanthus. Starting in the coastal town of Durban, we visit gardens and travel to the dramatic Giant’s Castle to discover unique plants, game animals, and bushman rock art.

No trip to Africa is complete without a big game safari. Kapama Game Reserve is home to many of Africa’s Big Five game animals: lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and rhinoceros, as well as a dazzling array of exquisite birds.
