Oh, the music, the camaraderie, the places we have seen....what a grand time! Cole, thank you for all you did to create a truly memorable visit to those eye-feast gardens.
Valerie Kyllo

A tour with Cole Burrell is always memorable. We see gardens that we could not otherwise see. Our individual garden tours are guided by head gardeners and garden owners.

I am pleased to present our upcoming tour lineup for 2017 and beyond.

Dear Garden and Nature Travelers,

Winter is settling in across the country, and even here in Virginia we have had some sleet and a few snowflakes. Today we are having a much-needed rain, as we went for nine weeks without a drop. As I sit inside at my computer, I am dreaming of lush, colorful gardens and exotic destinations. I am pleased to announce the launch of a fantastic domestic tour. This summer, consider joining me for Boston in Bloom: Gardens of Art and Architecture, June 8-14, 2017. Our itinerary includes visits to 18 private gardens, as well as parks, museums and the Arnold Arboretum.

Exciting International Destinations

In just a few weeks I will launch my highly anticipated Argentina: Gracious Gardens and Majestic Mountains, October 28-November 11, 2017 with a October 25-28 Pre-Tour Excursion to Iguazu Falls. Please check back for details of this exciting trip exploring private gardens, public parks, and beautiful national parks in Bariloche, the Argentine lakes district.

Gardens and Natural Wonders of Panama, July 11-22, 2017

A sensational opportunity for travel in 2017 comes from the Canopy Family of Ecolodges in Panama. We stayed with the Canopy Family during our 2015 Panama excursion. Jenn Sinasac, our expert guide during the tour, and owner Raul Aria de Para have invited me back to Panama for a reprise tour, adding more exciting gardens and additional opportunities for bird watching. Consider joining Jenn and me at the height of Panama’s “green season”, when gardens are at their zenith and birds are plentiful. For information and registration, visit the Canopy Family website.

New Tour Offerings

I am busy exploring possibilities for new destinations to visit and have lots of great trips in the planning process. If you are interested in any of the scheduled tours below and wish to get advance notice of registration, please contact me to add your name to the tour list.

Captivating Cuba: Nature Meets Culture

I spent two weeks in Cuba in March of 2016, exploring the culture and natural history of this amazing Caribbean island. From antique cars and the sights and sounds of old Havana, to beautiful beaches and amazing birdlife, Cuba is an enticing destination. Inspired by my visit, I am working with The Caribbean Conservation Trust on a tour for June of 2018 to explore art galleries, historic architecture and beautiful gardens. I will keep you updated as this exciting tour develops.

Gardens of Roberto Burle Marx and the Natural Wonders of Brazil, July 10-22, 2018

One additional special tour on the horizon, also for 2018 is a return to Brazil to discover the gardens of Roberto Burle Marx and to spend time in two extraordinary wild places, Itatiaia National Park and REGUA Atlantic Forest Reserve. Stay tuned for details of the special tour sponsored by Connecticut Audubon Society!

June 8-14, 2017Boston in Bloom: Gardens of Art and Architecture

Only Four Spaces Left—Register Now!

Boston’s colonial history and architecture are well known to travelers. Less familiar are the gardens of this historical city and surrounding towns. Join me and the Minnesota State Horticultural Society as we traverse the bucolic countryside to see a variety of stunning private and public gardens. We will explore world-class botanical gardens like The Arnold Arboretum and Elmbank. We have arranged private guided tours of Frederic Law Olmsted’s Emerald Necklace, which encircles the city in a series of historic parks and gardens, including the colorful Boston Public Garden. In addition, a wealth of private gardens in Boston, on Cape Cod and in Little Compton awaits discovery, with styles from classic to contemporary.

Enjoy a welcome reception and dinner at Elmbank, the gardens of The Massachusetts Horticultural Society and a full day of garden visits with Julie Moir Messervy, author of the award-winning book The Inward Garden. I have arranged guided tours of The Glass Flowers and Herbarium Collections at Harvard University, The Arnold Arboretum, and the gardens and art collections of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. We will also have the opportunity to shop for choice plants at Avant Gardens with owner Katherine Tracey. No visit to Little Compton would be complete without an elegant farewell dinner at Sakonnet, the private garden of John Gwynne and Mikel Folcarelli.

November 2018South Africa: Botanical Riches, Gardens, and Game Reserves

South Africa is noted for its bio-diversity, big game animals, birdlife, wines, cuisine, culture and history. During this springtime exploration we indulge in all that South Africa has to offer. The Cape Floral Region, the smallest but richest, of the world’s six floral kingdoms, is dominated by Mediterranean- type fynbos filled with botanical treasure. The Drakensberg Mountains offer a distinctly different flora, with familiar plants like gladiolus and agapanthus. In addition to wild areas, we will explore private and public gardens, including the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens at the foot of Capetown’s Table Mountain. No trip to Africa is complete without a safari. Sabi Sands Game Reserve is sure to reward a visit with view of Africa’s Big Five game animals, as well as a dazzling array of colorful birds.
